Mon-Rak Transistor

Directed by Pen-ek Ratanaruang

From the producers of TEARS OF THE BLACK TIGER, MON-RAK TRANSISTOR is the story of a young man who’s gotta sing. Loveable rogue Pan is happy to break into song at any public function. When he meets Sadaw, he pursues the demure young woman against her father’s wishes and marries her. Their idyllic life is interrupted when Pan is drafted into the Army. But the allure of the stage is too much and, in pursuit of his dream, Pan wrecks their lives. MON-RAK mixes a homage to Thai culture with a protest against the Westernising influences that have swamped it. “Billy Wilder has somehow been reborn in Bangkok.” Film Comment “This film is a piece of candy with just a taste of satirical poison at its centre.” Director Pen-ek Ratanaruang
