Visiting legendary director Nicholas Ray while preparing HAMMETT, Wenders finds him near death but anxious to ‘bring himself all together before he dies.’ At first hesitant to intrude into another’s pain, the documentary quickly becomes an emotionally intense portrait of a man for whom film was everything (with the unintended irony that the production of HAMMETT will prove as fraught for Wenders as any studio battle fought by Ray).
