Lean on Pete

Directed by Andrew Haigh

Andrew Haigh (Weekend, 45 Years) directs a modern-day western about a 15-year-old lost soul who hooks up with a pair of itinerant horse trainers (Steve Buscemi and Chloë Sevigny, both excellent) and develops a powerful bond with a racehorse on its last legs. Adapting the novel by Willy Vlautin, Haigh adds his name to the illustrious roll call of European filmmakers who have ventured to the American west in search of inspiration. Evocative of Kelly Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy, it features a fine, naturalistic performance from Charlie Plummer.

Lean on Pete is reviewed in our May film podcast and it starts at the 0.39 mark.
