Jesus’ Son

Directed by Alison Maclean

The first film from its New Zealand director since her début CRUSH (1992), this intense, darkly comic journey through seventies American drug culture is based on the powerful short stories collection by Denis Johnson. FH (Crudup) stumbles through life, fuelled by illegal substances. Although his mind is perpetually fogged there is goodness in his heart, and amidst his scams and thievery FH tries to help his fellow no-hopers, with varying degrees of failure, especially one young woman (Morton). Maclean elicits fine performances from the highly impressive cast meeting the promise of her acclaimed first feature.
