Indie TV Comedy Showcase

In the modern television climate, web series are becoming a much more common platform for the next generation of talent to get their projects off the ground and produced by major networks. Some of the US’s most critically acclaimed comedies such as Broad City, Animals, Drunk History and Children’s Hospital have been picked up by producers such as Amy Poehler, The Duplass Brothers and Seth Rogen for the likes of HBO, Comedy Central and NBC based on the discovery of their humble web series roots.

Pilot Light TV Festival presents a small selection of episodes from two outstanding contemporary comedy web series that represent and scream ‘the next big thing’ in indie TV comedy.

This programme features:

Concrete Jungle
Creator Steven Cartoccio/US/48 mins
This animated show falls somewhere between the sardonic humour of Netflix’s human/animal mash up Bojack Horseman and the New York tales in The Duplass Brother’s HBO hit Animals. The show features the vocal talents of John Dimaggio (Adventure Time), Hannibal Buress (30 Rock) and Krystyna Hutchinson (Saturday Night Live) who star in a New York City where humans and animals coexist, but their struggles are all the same.

Transplanting
Creators Lea McLellan & Andrew Vasco/US/40 mins
This show came from the success of a very strong Broad City spec script by its co-creator Lea McLellan. In very much the same mumblecore spirit of humour, Transplanting is an indie comedy that follows 20-something Maeve as she escapes the chaos of New York life to try and live the small town life in Ashville, North Carolina. Broke and jobless, she does her best to stay positive and make it work.
