In the Land of the Free

Directed by Vadim Jean

This affecting documentary tells the ongoing story of the Angola 3: Herman Wallace, Albert Woodfox and Robert King, prisoners held in solitary confinement in the Louisiana State Penitentiary for over three decades after being accused of murdering a prison guard.

Narrated by Samuel L Jackson, the film examines the story of these three extraordinary men who claim to have been targeted by the prison authorities for being members of the Black Panther party because they fought against the terrible conditions and systematic sexual slavery that was rife in the prison. Herman and Albert were subsequently convicted for the murder of a prison guard, despite there being no physical evidence against them, and the main witness being bribed with his freedom for testifying against them.

Wallace and Woodfox are still held in solitary today, whilst King who was held in solitary for 29 years, had his conviction overturned in 2001, since which time he’s tirelessly campaigned all over the world to help bring justice for Herman and Albert.

Including a post-screening Q&A with director, Vadim Jean.
