Theatre actor-director Steen makes his début as screenwriter and film director with this darkly comic, Catcher in the Rye-type portrait of a privileged adolescent rebelling against his seriously dysfunctional family and the vacant lives of their well-to-do world. Igby (Culkin) has witnessed his dad’s breakdown, his bitchy mum’s peppy pill-popping, and his handsome Republican older brother’s fascist tendencies. Shipped off by mum to a military school, Igby escapes and heads for the bohemian life of Manhattan’s East Village, complete with sex and drugs.
