During the dying days of the British rule of India, Olivia (Scacchi) travels there to be the wife of a British official. But she is bored by the stifled British ruling clique and is drawn instead to the court of a local Indian prince, and later into an affair with the Prince himself. This hugely successful Merchant-Ivory production was based on the novel by Ruth Prawer Jabhvala.
