Happy-Go-Lucky

Directed by Mike Leigh

Described by Variety as Mike Leigh’s ‘mellowest’ and ‘most purely entertaining’ film, there’s no doubting that in this case the title really does describe what’s in the tin – with a hint of Salford attitude, of course!

Ever effervescent 30-year-old Poppy (Berlin Film Fest winner Hawkins) is a North London primary school teacher with an optimistic outlook that she spreads amongst her fellow teacher and flatmate Zoe, her sister, friends, strangers and even her morose, racist driving instructor (Marsan).

Leigh’s first film since VERA DRAKE is miles away from the time and tone of that work whilst its focus on one character over others makes it a distant cousin to naked. But in the universe of Mike Leigh, HAPPY-GO-LUCKY is in a world of its own.
