Hamaca paraguaya

Directed by Paz Encina

Winner of the Un Certain Regard Critics Prize at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, HAMACA is the one of the rare features to have been made in Paraguay.

1935, an elderly peasant couple spend the humid autumn afternoon in a rural clearing, talking and waiting for rain, for the dog to stop barking – and for the return of their son, fighting in the Chaco war against Bolivia. Encina’s fascinating drama is resolutely minimalist and formally rigorous, comprised of long takes and a disjointed non-sync sound mix.

Produced by Lita Stantic, HAMACA is one of the six New Crowned Hope films.
