Fading Memories

Directed by Enrique Gabriel

Enrique Gabriel’s third feature offers “a beautifully understated portrait of a community undergoing emotional and political turmoil” (Toronto Film Festival). Manuel (Luppi) returns from years in Argentina to his native Higueras. But his arrival coincides with the imminent submersion of the village beneath a new, Brussels-sanctioned reservoir. Manuel has come back in hopes of re-kindling an old flame and reuniting with friends. But instead he finds himself drawn into the bitter rivalries and land disputes that financial compensation inspires. An excellent script and equally impressive cast (especially veterans Luppi and Alterio) combine with stunning shots of rural Leon to create a subtly disturbing, yet at times humorous, insight into human dreams and disappointment.
