Exodus Shorts 2008

As part of Exodus Shorts Refugee Film Festival 2008, this selection of work showcases the talents of refugee filmmakers as well as short films that give a fresh and diverse perspective on the lives of migrant communities. Films screened include STILL HUMAN STILL HERE: THE DESTINATION OF REFUSED ASYLUM SEEKERS, a powerful short film produced by Nick Broomfield in collaboration with Amnesty International.

Some of the filmmakers will be present for an informal post-screening Q&A.

After his Father is taken by militia from their home in Africa, Kosey is thrust into an uncertain and daunting future in the UK. This young Lion must find his way through the urban jungle guided by just his heart and an ancient tale.

What happens when a Rwandan genocide survivor meets a young man from Darfur? This is the tale of a friendship made on fragile emotional grounds. A subtle treatment of a complex subject set in the world of London’s night cleaners.

 

Still Human Still Here: The Destitution of Refused Asylum Seekers.

Dir: Marc Hoeferlin, Nick Broomfield, 12 mins 40 seconds, Documentary.

A powerful new short film from Amnesty International showing the destitution suffered by refused UK asylum seekers denied support or the right to work, but unable or unwilling to return to an unsafe country. The film features real life case studies talking about their experiences of sleeping rough, scavenging for food and depending on hand-outs to clothe themselves.

 

Sza (Pain). 

Dir: Chiman Rahimi, 13 mins 20 seconds, Drama.

This film tells a story of a Kurdish teenager living in Britain. She is in love with a young English man, but their relationship is kept in the dark from the family. The story then unfolds of her fate once her father learns of their secret relationship.

 

Color Ice-Cream. 

Dir: Ako Sirini, 11 Mins 40 seconds, Drama.

The Struuiksm family go shopping in one of Holland’s Open markets. Everything seems attractive and pleasant until they suddenly find that their child, Ana is missing!

 

 

The Beating Wing Orchestra

Dir: Chris Gardner and Mark Baron, 15 mins, Music Documentary.

The film concentrates on the rehearsal and first major gig of the Beating Wing Orchestra, a collection of musicians from a diverse range of backgrounds.
