As with the director’s short film trilogy, Davies’ début feature was drawn from his own life during the 40s and 50s and that of his siblings. The story of a working class family overseen by a violent, despotic father is transformed by the director’s ironic and emotionally powerful use of popular music into transcendent cinema.
