Death and the Maiden

Directed by Roman Polanski

Screenwriter Ariel Dorfman adapted his own play about a Latin American couple’s unexpected and life threatening encounter with a man who, years earlier, may have been the woman’s torturer while she was a political prisoner. Polanski keeps the drama claustrophically intense, focusing on the subtle shifts in power, the psychology and ethics of guilt, corruption and revenge, and the terrific performances.
