Dance of the Vampires

Directed by Roman Polanski

This affectionate spoof of Hammer-style vampire movies looks ravishing, thanks to elegant art direction and Douglas Slocombe’s typically fine camerawork. MacGowran and Polanski find themselves at risk in a castle, while sundry colourful Swinging 60s folk (Terry Downes!) lend engaging support. Krzysztof Komeda’s score is as delightful as in the earlier films, and the climactic vampire ball is a superb set-piece.
