Cochochi

Directed by Israel Cárdenas & Laura Amelia Guzmán

Produced by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna’s Canana, COCHOCHI was based on the directors’ residence with the Tarahumara people of northwest Mexico, and is shot mainly in the indigenous language. With locals contributing to everything from script to acting, the fable-like drama follows two young brothers. The pair are sent to deliver some medicine to a distant relative and decide to ‘borrow’ Grandad’s horse against his wishes. The horse goes missing and so begins their adventures.

This rare glimpse of a disappearing way of life captures the essence of the landscape and the local culture. Winner of the Discovery Prize at the 2007 Toronto Film Festival.
