Carnages

Directed by Delphine Gleize

If meat is murder then this is a killer directorial debut indeed. A string of largely unrelated characters’ stories are interlinked through the symbolic choice cuts of a bull slaughtered after goring a novice torero. CARNAGES demonstrates the everyday violence of everyday lives. A struggling actress (Mastroianni) gets a supermarket job selling the butchered products. An epileptic girl’s dog gets a large bone; a distracted professor with a pregnant wife acquires the eyes; a distraught mother with secrets (Molina) orders toro en rioja in a restaurant. Shot through with startling and at times shocking images, colours, and bravura editing, CARNAGES won the Prix de la Jeunesse at Cannes. Please note: Some scenes may disturb, including those of animal slaughter.
