Beloved

Directed by Christophe Honoré

Starring French icon Catherine Deneuve (Potiche) alongside her real-life daughter Chiara Mastroianni, this epic and exquisitely romantic musical drama from director Christophe Honoré (Love Songs) spans over three decades following a mother and daughter’s misadventures in love.

Ludivine Sagnier portrays the young Madeleine, who abandons the frothy fun of 1960s Paris to join her doctor husband Jaromil in downtrodden Prague. Jaromil’s infidelities soon catch up with him and the arrival of Russian tanks in the city lead Madeleine back to her homeland. Fast forward thirty years to modern day Paris and we are introduced to Madeleine’s daughter Véra, who struggles to come to terms with the fallouts of her carefree and casual sexual encounters in the shadow of AIDS.

At first glance whimsical and light-hearted, Beloved transpires as an incredibly contemporary, moving, weird and wonderful melodrama with a sublime musical score by regular Honoré collaborator Alex Beaupain.
