Released in 1960, this is a great later example of the work of Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Here the pair contributed book and lyrics to this film adaptation of their 1956 Broadway hit of the same name. Directed by maestro of the Hollywood musical Vincente Minnelli, Judy Holliday reprises her Tony award-winning Broadway role as Ella, a switchboard operator, alongside Dean Martin in a plot that involves an array of amusingly confusing interactions between her and those who use her service Susanswerphone.

Screening as part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery, BFI Film Audience Network and ICO.
