Bal is a beautifully shot and contemplative study of childhood in rural Turkey. Kaplanoglu’s film features captivating cinematography which presents the Turkish mountains in beautiful, affecting detail. Yusuf is an only child living a sheltered life with his parents in the mountains of Turkey.  The young Yusuf is completely devoted to his father, who provides a distraction from his son’s struggles at school.  When their relationship is at risk, Yusuf takes it into his own hands to get his father back. Awarded the Golden Bear at the 2010 Berlin Film Festival.
