Now digitally restored, the final film by Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu is one of his most touching works and, thanks to Yuharu Atsuta’s camerawork, one of the most beautiful. An Autumn Afternoon finds an elderly widower and his daughter entertaining mixed emotions about the prospect of her marriage which would leave her father to fend for himself. Simultaneously playful and poignant, it is a wonderful example of Ozu’s trademark blend of understatement and precision.
