Hiroshi Abe plays Ryota, a former novelist now working for a private detective agency in a Tokyo surburb. He claims his spying on cheating couples is research for a new book. But in reality instead he’s feeding the addiction that helped disrupt his family life. After his father’s death he contacts his estranged mother in an attempt at reconciliation, but a powerful typhoon is forging its own path towards the city. The latest work from Japanese master Kore-eda (Still Walking) is another tender, well-observed drama that blends melancholy with insight.
