For what turned out to be his final film, Altman teamed with author and radio raconteur Keillor for a truly Altmanesque comic backstage musical, based on Keillor’s eponymous weekly show. Besides writing the screenplay, the radio host is one of the stellar members of the ensemble cast who shine as the performers of a weekly radio variety show. They’ve recorded in the same theatre for years until a corporate Texan arrives to shut them down.
