5 x 2

Directed by François Ozon

In his most adult film, Ozon charts five scenes from across the life of a marriage – that of Marion and Gilles. But unlike most films on the subject, 5 x 2 alters the proceedings and our perception of them by starting at the end and working back to the beginning. Thus the film opens with divorce and finishes with the first meeting, in an ironic structure that proves both emotionally devastating and intellectually incisive. The reversed narrative would not stand without the support of the outstanding performances, especially from the central duo. “A masterpiece by any standards” Jonathan Romney, LFF programme
