Directed by Steve McQueen

12 Years A Slave is available to watch on mubi, here.

Steve McQueen’s powerful 12 Years A Slave is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist forever alters his life.

This screening is timed for 23 August, the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, which marks the night of the insurrection in Saint-Domingue that played a crucial role in putting an end to the transatlantic slave trade.
