101 Reykjavik

Directed by Baltasar Kormakur

Kormakur’s been dubbed an Icelandic Almodóvar for his wacky take on 101 REYKJAVIK. (Of course the presence of Abril helps…) Hlynur is a 28-year-old slacker living on the dole at home with mum. She’s the only woman he can understand – and can tolerate him. When mum’s sexy flamenco teacher comes to stay, Hlynur discovers that mother is a lesbian, and his comfortably boring little world is upturned. Bright, colourful set design contrasts with grey icy Icelandic vistas, whilst the tale’s (and Iceland’s) quirky rhythms are reflected in the extraordinary score by Damon Albarn and Einar Orn Benediktsson of the Sugarcubes.
