Breakdown Bolton: By a Thread

Inspire Gallery

Founded in 2016, Breakdown Bolton is a community interest company which is peer led by artists and writers who have had experience of mental health issues. They work in many different art forms and aim to offer participants high quality arts classes, exhibition, and cultural opportunities. They do this by promoting high level creativity, individual expression, and empowerment through art, in a safe and positive environment for those across the Greater Manchester region.

By a Thread is a collection of stitched photographs made by participants on Breakdown Bolton’s Dragon’s Den workshops funded by GMMH.  The history of this art form dates back to the turn of the century, before technology gave made it possible to print in colour.

Embroidered pictures were often sold to tourists with coloured thread added to monochromatic photographs. The artists used this process to alter images that were either portraits or items that represent the individual artist.  The thread was used to change or add to the meaning of the image and create a narrative to the photograph.

Breakdown Bolton is one of the many groups HOME works with through the #HOMEinspires programme.

You will find this exhibition in our ground floor café bar.
