The Booth Centre: Arrival

The Booth Centre brings about positive change in the lives of people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and helps them plan for and realise a better future.

This exhibition is part of our #HOMEinspires Programme connecting HOME with the city’s most essential voluntary groups and charities, both as audiences and as artists. Our partners, the Booth Centre have created this exhibition as part of their arts programme.

The artwork for Arrival was created throughout the last few months during the weekly art and textile sessions that take place at the Booth Centre. Sessions are open to anyone who comes to the centre and the artists displaying their work here have explored their own themes and interests and have worked with session leaders to develop their skills and ideas. Using different mediums has enabled the artists to experiment, in turn building their confidence and self-esteem. People attending the sessions can be putting pen to paper for the first time or returning to something they haven’t been able to do for a while.

The opportunity to be distracted, or to try something new in these sessions contributes to a supportive and positive environment where people realise their potential and discover new ambitions. A lot of focus and resources go into encouraging people on their journey through the Booth Centre, however the focus of this exhibition is arrival. Arrival is that point at which somebody finally arrives; into a new frame of mind, a new way of being, a new idea of self, a whole new life, and can from there begin a new and brighter journey. The Booth Centre helps people to finally arrive and this is shared through this exhibition.

“Attending regular art workshops helps people to improve their mental health, well-being and social networks. They help people to develop the skills and confidence needed to move on from homelessness, for good. People who are homeless need more than a bed and a roof, they need to be seen, to be heard, to be supported, and to know that they have a legitimate place in society.  This exhibition is helping us realise this aim.” – Bella Leonard, The Booth Centre
