Film details

The Warrior is the debut from Asif Kapadia. Best known for his documentaries, the BAFTA-winning Senna and the BAFTA and Oscar-winning Amy, Kapadia won BAFTAs in both the Debut Film and British Film categories for this sumptuous epic starring the extraordinary Indian actor Irrfan Khan (who also starred in The Lunchbox and The Life of Pi).

Khan plays Lafcadia, a man torn between the path of peace and the path of war. Gripped by a vision, Lafcadia is the leader of a group of warriors hired by a local lord to enforce his rule among the people. When he is ordered to punish a village that has failed to pay tribute, Lafcadia renounces his violent ways and sets off on a journey to the mountain village in which he was born. The lord then dispatches Biswas (Aino Annuddin), Lafcadia’s second-in-command, to track-down the former warrior and punish his betrayal with death.

From the deserts of Rajasthan to the snowy Himalayas, this is an astonishingly ambitious terrifically confident’ (Guardian) debut feature that deserves to be re-discovered on the big screen.
