Situationists and the City

In May 1968 France was brought to a standstill by a wave of wildcat strikes, riots and protests affecting all levels of society: what is surprising is that the ideas animating these disturbances came from a small group of artists calling themselves the Situationists. This course will provide a comprehensive survey of the art and philosophy of this group, examine their legacy of influence on cultural movements from Punk to Acid House, and explore how their ideas might still be relevant to us today.
