Community, musicianship and colonialism. Featuring Ríoghnach Connolly (flute, vocal). Abstract video, digital animation.
Part of Counterpoint, a series of four new films by filmmaker Antony Barkworth-Knight in collaboration with Manchester based musicians Graham Massey, Olivia Moore, Ríoghnach Connolly and John Ellis.
Featuring cameos from Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock (amongst others), Bertrand Tavernier’s portrait of fictional saxophonist Dale Turner, regarded as a composite of Bud Powell and Lester Young, is powered by a towering lead performance from an Oscar-nominated Dexter Gordon. The film spawned two soundtracks, an official score by Hancock (Academy Award Winner) and Gordon’s The Other Side of Round Midnight, one of his last recordings.
