Romeo & Juliet Community Project/ Opposites Attract

Throughout August 2014 HOME’s Engagement Team delivered free creative workshops covering paper sculpture, dance, filmmaking and sound design across 3 community centres in Wythenshawe. All work made was exhibited in a cross-art-form installation which took place at Victoria Baths in September and accompanied HOME’s site specific production of Romeo & Juliet.

The workshops were open to all ages and led by professional artists, dancers, filmmakers and sound designers who showed participants the tricks of the trade in order for them to create their own masterpieces.

The artwork was installed in the atmospheric rooms upstairs in Victoria Baths to accompany HOME’s site specific production of Romeo & Juliet and included film projections, soundscapes and paper sculpture. The work was inspired by themes, characters and text from the play.

The installation, entitled Opposites Attract, was open to audience members an hour before each performance of Romeo & JulietIt consisted of four rooms that each portrayed a different theme or emotion inspired by the play.

In total we delivered 63 hours of workshops across 3 community centres in Wythenshawe. 169 local community members participated in the workshops and we welcomed 200 visitors from varying community groups to the free open dress rehearsal of Romeo & Juliet and a special preview of the art installation at Victoria Baths. Overall 2988 people visited the installation during the course of the month long production period.
