Realism in Contemporary European Cinema

This course will consider the concept of realism in relation to examples of contemporary European cinema. It will explore different notions of realism, in terms of realist conventions of style and narrative, the influence of documentary and neo-realist shooting styles and social realism. The course will also explore the naturalist tendency to depict on screen what has previously been unseen – the day-to-day experience of dispossessed groups, authentic representations of national or local culture, or more graphic depictions of violence and sexuality, and illegal and antisocial acts. Led by Jason Scott, lecturer in Film Studies at Sheffield Hallam University. Advanced level – for those with significant film studies experience.Tickets: £40.00 full / £32.00 concs
