This illustrated talk explores the films of Wong Kar-Wai in relation to the Hong Kong star system. In employing the industry’s biggest commercial stars, such as Leslie Cheung, Maggie Cheung, and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Wong’s films do not have an opposing relationship, but a complementary one, to mainstream Hong Kong cinema. The discussion will focus mainly on the re-release of Ashes of Time, but will draw on Wong’s other films.
