One Hour Intro: Is This England?

This introductory talk considers British cinema during the Thatcher years, and looks at how films at the time addressed the ‘state-of-the-nation’. Some did this directly (MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE), some used allegory – (THE COOK, THE THIEF…) while others took flight to the past (HOWARDS END; DISTANT VOICES, STILL LIVES).

Dr Andrew Moor will also contextualise Shane Meadows’ THIS IS ENGLAND by looking at other recent films which have caught the mood of the 80s.
