J Chuhan considers the problematic status of women in South Asian and British societies, and the use of creativity by women artists as a means of empowerment and changing identities and perceptions. She will focus on works in the exhibition What do you want?, in the wider context of art and culture, and show how ‘creative strategies’ encompass multiple interpretations, from the actual making of art to dealing with sociological aspects of life.
J Chuhan’s work has been exhibited internationally and at venues in the UK including Tate Liverpool; Barbican Centre,(London); Ikon (Birmingham) and Arnolfini, (Bristol); and features in collections including the Arts Council Collection, University of Liverpool Collection and Usher Gallery, Lincoln. She is Professor of International Art at Liverpool John Moores University.
