There are four films called A Star Is Born, but several other films telling the same story (including Bollywood and porn versions) as well as a radio play and, first, a novel. This richly illustrated talk by Richard Dyer will look across all the versions. What differences are there between them? What do they all think it means to say a star is ‘born’? What effect does it have when the star in question is a singer and the story becomes a musical? And what makes the Judy Garland – James Mason – George Cukor version special?

Screening as part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery, BFI Film Audience Network and ICO.
