Director Margarethe von Trotta’s acclaimed film is based on the story of actual siblings, the Esslin sisters, who channeled their feminist activism in very different directions. Gudrun joined the Baader-Meinhof terrorist group and was imprisoned in Stammheim where she later died. Christiane worked as an editor of a woman’s magazine.
