A HOME Commission

This event has now finished

Homelands was an interactive project, exploring what happens when everything you know has been turned upside down.

Participants were thrown into the centre of an imagined world and asked to creatively respond to the upheaval they found themselves in. Each member of Plaster Cast created an original fictional world, and recorded audio to accompany it. We then wrote 10 unique stories each, for 50 participants overall. We wrote out these stories by hand. Each member of the Homelands community received an original story in the post, and was asked to respond creatively to it. We ended up with a range of responses, from stories to photos to drawings!

Homelands was a collaborative way to catalogue human ingenuity and provide escapism during a time of crisis. It was for anyone who needed a creative outlet and sense of connection during the complicated time of Covid-19.

The worlds we created were:
Gnome World, Underwater World, Spaceship World, Fantasy World and Zombie World.

What did Homelands mean to the members of Plaster Cast?

Libby: Homelands to me represented connection, and the gorgeous ability of people to stay creative and find joy in scary times.

Lizzie: Homelands for me has been a bizarre, uncomfortable and extremely educational experience in how to be creative in dystopian circumstances.

Jess: Homelands has been an absolute dream. To have a project to keep me creatively sane, whilst also allowing a connection with others, proves the power that art has in difficult times!

Ayden: Homelands meant something positive and creative to focus on.

Sam: Homelands for me was about proving that we are not isolated just because we’re at home- and we are all storytellers.

Homemakers

Homemakers is a series of new commissions, where we invite our favourite artists to create work at home, for an audience who are also at home.

We’re not pretending that all art can be experienced online just as satisfactorily as in person; but we want to demonstrate the innovation of artists who work all kinds of forms, by inviting them to respond to this very specific context. We want to bring contemporary new performance to audiences all over the world, in all its form-flexing, mind-expanding, surprising subversive brilliance.
