High Tide: Antipodean Women Directors

With MY BRILLIANT CAREER (1979), Gillian Armstrong was the first woman to direct a feature in Australia in over 30 years. The Antipodean film industries enjoyed a revival from the 70s, but it was in the 80s and 90s that women filmmakers really shone on the international stage, culminating with THE PIANO (1993), the only film directed by a woman to win the Palme D’Or. (Campion is also one of only two women to be nominated for a ‘Best Director’ Oscar.)
