Screening: Mustang (CTBA)
Dir Deniz Gamze Ergüven / 2015 / 97 mins

Lale, Nur, Selma, Ece and Sonay are five sisters living in a remote coastal village in Turkey with their Grandmother and Uncle, since the death of their parents a decade ago. Free-spirited, laid back and coming-of-age, their lives are suddenly reversed after an afternoon of playing on the beach is misread by a neighbour as scandalous frolicking. Panicked by the village gossip, Grandmother and Uncle punish them by imprisoning them in their home, replacing their clothes with severe brown dresses and readying them for marriage. Made by a first-time director, with a largely unknown cast, Mustang is a brilliant and moving exploration of adolescence, identity and female empowerment as the sisters negotiate their confinement.
