French A2 Study Day: Bande de filles

Recommended for A2 and equivalent level French

This study day will address the representation of young people in multicultural banlieues, especially young black women who are not often portrayed in French cinema.

Isabelle Vanderschelden will present the film in French, providing relevant contextual information on genre, actors and the director, as well as introducing key vocabulary needed to discuss and understand the film.

The screening will be followed after lunch by a series of language exercises in French, which aim to gain an understanding of the main characters’ identity, and their sociocultural background. Students will also have the opportunity to practise their oral skills and discuss some aspects of film style (visual style, use of music, space etc.) and the intentions of the director.

Led by Isabelle Vanderschelden, Head of French at Manchester Metropolitan University

Screening: Bande de filles (Girlhood) (15)
Dir Céline Sciamma / France 2015 / 113 mins / In French with English Subtitles / Karidja Touré / Assa Sylla / Lindsay Karamoh / Mariétou Touré

The third feature from Celine Sciamma (Waterlilies, Tomboy) is a superlative coming-of-age drama that provides an insightful look into adolescence and gang culture.
