This session will focus on Under the Shadow as a case study to explore narrative expectations and genre fluidity. Under the Shadow is a 2016 internationally co-produced horror film written and directed by Iranian-born Babak Anvari as his directorial debut. The study day will allow students the opportunity to debate the subversion of generic conventions and explore how narrative techniques operate to allow socio-political subtexts to emerge.
Led by Dr Kirsty Fairclough, Senior Lecturer in Media and Performance, University of Salford

This ambitious feature debut blends period detail of 1980s Iran with a good old-fashioned horror story, crafting a film that is as smart as it is scary.
