Film & Media Study Day: Identity and the City: Girlhood

Recommended for A2 and equivalent level Film & Media Studies

One of the most discussed films of the year, Girlhood offers a study text focusing on representations of gender, ethnicity and social class in les cités, the housing estates on the outskirts of Paris. Forming the final part of a loose trilogy about girls growing up in the Paris region, it presents a different narrative to Mathieu Kassovitz’s male-centred La Haine (France 1995), which similarly raised questions about the lives of youths in les cités.

This event will offer students the opportunity to discuss representation issues including the vision and ‘voice’ of the writer-director, the use of non-professional actors and the presentation of Paris as an urban landscape.

Led by Roy Stafford, Freelance Film Lecturer

Screening: Bande de filles (Girlhood) (15)

Dir Céline Sciamma / France 2015 / 113 mins / In French with English Subtitles/ Karidja Touré / Assa Sylla / Lindsay Karamoh / Mariétou Touré

The third feature from Celine Sciamma (Waterlilies, Tomboy) is a superlative coming-of-age drama that provides an insightful look into adolescence and gang culture.
