Directing Masterclass: Richard Jobson

exposures’ annual directing masterclass is your chance to fish for tips from a leading UK filmmaker. Released this July, directorial debut 16 YEARS OF ALCOHOL has put former Skids frontman and journalist Richard Jobson firmly in the limelight as a filmmaker to follow. Spanning childhood, adolescence and adulthood, the film follows Frankie (Kevin McKidd) through his struggle with violence and alcohol in Edinburgh’s subcultures. Despite the low budget, Jobson avoids kitchen sink cliché, prefering instead a visual style and poetic voiceover more akin to his idol, Wong Kar-wai. Jobson, who shoots on high definition DV, has already completed his second feature – THE PURIFIERS – a futuristic martial arts film set in Scotland, and is in pre-production on a third, a ghost story also set in Edinburgh.
