Derek Gores: Fierce beauty/ Collage and mixed media workshop

In his collage portraits, Florida-based artist Derek Gores recycles magazines, labels, data and assorted found materials to create works on canvas. Gores’ work showcases his interests in the female form, the design aesthetics of fashion and a fearless sense of play.

Gores says of his work, “I do reference a classic beauty, but made of raw and geometric and un-designed parts. My real subject in the figurative women is the study of ‘Fierce’. Strength, honesty, vulnerability – admired with utmost respect.”

In this hands-on workshop led by Gores, you will create your own rip-and-paste collage of a female subject using collage materials. A selection will be provided, but do please bring some materials for your own use. Please note, these do not need to be specifically from fashion or beauty sources, as Gores often works with opposites and alternate origins; his work Love and Only (2010), a picture of a same- sex family constructed from pieces of anti-gay hate speech, was made as an artistic response to California’s former gay marriage ban.

Suitable for beginners, no prior knowledge necessary. Please note that this workshop is available for people aged 18 or over.

This workshop will be repeated at 11:00-16:00 on Sun 3 November for young people aged 14-18. If you’re within this age group and would like to book a free ticket, email livewire@cornerhouse.org
