Creative Memory of the Syrian Revolution: Exhibition Tour

Join us for a free exhibition tour, led by Sana Yazigi Co-Curator of the Creative Memory of the Syrian Revolution exhibition and creator of the online archive of the same name.

The revolution in Syria provided a space for creativity and ingenuity that was astounding. Syrians wondered where had all this talent in satire, art, and innovation been hiding?

The outburst of the uprising against oppression and tyranny brought on a surge of remarkable, latent energy, presented the spontaneous and the organized, in a way never before seen in all of Syria’s years marked by repression and injustice.

The Creative Memory of the Syrian Revolution project, which this exhibition is curated from, aims to document all forms of intellectual expression, both artistic and cultural, during the time of the revolution, by writing, recording, and collecting stories of the Syrian people, and the experiences through which they have regained meaning of their social, political, and cultural lives.

This is meticulously curated into an online archive lead by a dedicated team who can now no longer return to their home country. Bringing together the creative output of the Syrian revolution all together in one place.

The website aims to enhance the impact of the artistic Syrian resistance, to reinforce its place in the revolution, to archive and spread the messages it expresses, and to help establish networks between the groups or the individuals who animate it, as well as links with the outside world.

Here, the artist is considered a citizen before anything else, resisting with his/her art and standing by his/her people’s fight for freedom.

A small selection of this work has been curated by Sana Yazigi and Anne Louise Kershaw into this exhibition which will be presented throughout the HOME building for Horizons Festival.

Sana Yazigi will be talking about her book ‘The Story of a Place’ and signing copies in the Event Space on Saturday 15th June, 20.00

The project is supported by Rethink Rebuild Society. Rethink Rebuild exist to inspire, strengthen and advocate for refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants, in particular, but not exclusively, Syrians in the UK and help them become an effective part of British society.
