Commedia all’Italiana: Comedy, Italian-style

This beginners’ level course will focus on the distinctively Italian genre, the Commedia all’Italiana. These comedies became increasingly popular in Italy in the 1960s and 1970s and most of the Commedia all’Italiana’s success was due to skilled directors like Pietro Germi and actors including Marcello Mastroianni and Stefania Sandrelli, whose perfect chemistry helped create unique films.

Using clips and group discussion we will analyse the economic, social and cinematic features that shaped the genre, and will explore whether the definition of Commedia all’Italiana still applies to some examples of contemporary Italian comedy.

Beginners’ level, no prior knowledge required
