Cinema and Authorship (Part 2)

What is an auteur? This intermediate level course will examine the role of the director in filmmaking: can a director be the true ‘author’ of a film and how do independent films differ from studio productions? Various questions will be raised and examined through case studies of directors from classical Hollywood to European cinema. Course screenings to be confirmed. Please note, this course follows on from last year’s Cinema and Authorship, though completion of this previous course is not a prerequisite and different case studies will be looked at.Intermediate level – for those with some prior knowledge of film studies.Led by Maggie Hoffgen, freelance film lecturer and regular Cornerhouse contributor.
