CAN Young Artists At HOME Project 2018

CAN Young Artists at HOME (CYA@HOME) are a company of young performers aged 13-18 who produce a piece of theatre each year at HOME. Previous performances include What’s Done is Done, performed in the studio space in 2016 and Snow Dragons performed on the main stage as part of National Theatre Connections 2017.

CYA@HOME is a partnership project between Community Arts North West and HOME providing quality cultural production opportunities as well as personal and creative development for Manchester’s young people. The group collaborate with professional artists to shape and perform original, exciting and contemporary theatre as well as develop theatre making skills, creative knowledge and experience live theatre through a programme of practical workshops and cultural visits.

This year CYA@HOME, working alongside director, Kate Bradnam and writer and theatre maker, Ria Hartley, devised a brand new piece of performance exploring what it means to be different through personal stories and the stories of other young people in Manchester. Inspired by an exploration of personal difference, this intimate and powerful performance centred around the stories and voices of a young company, fuelled by moments of heart-break, politics and uplifting wisdom.

The performance piece was also adapted over the summer into a short film directed by Kate Bradnam and filmed by ShortForm, a Manchester based video production company.

A Generation Rising intertwines biographical narratives, visual performance, live music and audio soundscapes; the performance offers a generous and honest account of the lives and experiences of this young collective.

Shortlisted for Best Performance at the Manchester Culture Awards 2019.
